How can I organize my warehouse better with custom barcodes/labels?

The old way of labeling shelves in a warehouse was to label the shelf with the part number (SKU) of the item being stored there necessitating much moving locations, relabeling, etc. when quantities or SKUs changed.  Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) are now used to keep track of what is stored and where using software and barcode scanners.

The shelves are now labeled one time with a location code and it’s barcode representation.  When stock is stored in that location, the location code is scanned and the system then knows exactly where that stock is stored.

As an example, for pallet rack storage, pallets of the same item may be stored in various locations but the WMS knows where it all is and can direct retrieval.  Our custom barcode labels are individually printed with human readable codes and corresponding barcodes derived from an Excel spreadsheet provided by our customers.
